This paper represents an analysis of rural social work and, in particular, of the social worker in Romania’s countryside. In a while when the importance of investing in rural social work is rather passed over, this paper emphasizes the necessity of professional training that is felt by countryside social work practitioners, the understanding that they have regarding the importance of a good collaboration with others institutions and specialists or of a holistic approach of the intervention and the difficulties or challenges which they have to face. The paper is based on a qualitative study on the perception that persons, responsible for the local social work, have, regarding social work as a profession, regarding the social problems and the difficulties they have to face, as well as the way in which they interact with the people in need. It also touches upon the importance and influence a professional training has in this area. By outlining the characteristics of Romania’s social workers and by outlining some theoretical aspects of the field, it was aimed mainly at analyzing the importance of the rural social work as well as the importance of education and training specialists to intervene at this level. The way in which the social workers act, their professionalism or lack of it, the access to information as well as the necessary means of particularized prevention and intervention, all of these are extremely important.
