The current marginal position of youth on the labour market (high unemployment rates, low paid jobs etc.) has raised a lot of concerns among researchers and policy-makers around the world due mainly to its influence on the future of the public pension system. This article explores an alternative explanation for this situation – the role of work values shared by the current young generation influence them in making certain choices regarding their participation on the labour market, thus partially contributing to their above mentioned marginal position on the labour market. Of course, this has to be put in the context of the social policies regarding youth employment and youth participation at higher education and the weak connection between these two systems.
