Legalizing illicit drugs in Romania is a controversial topic that has led to many ideas and paradigm conceptions among not only the very consumers of these drugs, but also among the non-consuming base of citizens. The purpose of this study is to show how the illicit drug use among the youth would change, in the event of legalization of narcotics in Romania. Many countries in the European Union have taken various measures related to handling the menace over the use and regulation of these drugs, a concrete example being provided by Portugal, a country that has decriminalised drug use and put more emphasis on drug treatment rather than on punishment over its unregulated, unlawful, and illicit use. And another approach that focuses mainly on implementing sanctions to deter consumption was implemented in Sweden, a country whose authorities have declared a zero tolerance towards illicit drug use. The Romanian model for combating drug use and trafficking is more similar to that of Sweden than that of Portugal as in Romania possession and trafficking of drugs are acts of a criminal nature, punishable by imprisonment, depending on the gravity of the deed. In Romania, some people are pro legalization, arguing that narcotics are not a major risk for the consuming population base in the country, although, in contrast, other people who are against legalizing narcotics strongly believe and project that these should not come into legality because using narcotics involves many risks and most likely to contribute to its consumption growing in an uncontrolled manner.
