In 2004, because of a long process of professional recognition, social work gained legal framework as a regulated profession in Romania. Present study tries to present the actual situation of social workers in Romania to contribute to a better understanding of the past challenges to prepare further developments. Present social challenges increase the level of social problems and for this reason the involvement of social workers is necessary to become most important for public policies in the field of social protection. Also, social work professional community should become aware of all these changes and should continue to promote and advocate for common interest of profession and for access to better services for vulnerable categories. The major problem is related with the insufficient number of social workers and the uneven distribution in Romania counties.
