The evaluation is one of the most important phases of any social development process. Social programs evaluation integrates knowledge provided by other social disciplines and uses both qualitative and quantitative methods. Despite the controversies about the advantages and disadvantages of the qualitative and quantitative methods, one of the essential aspects of any evaluation is the adequacy of the methods to the evaluation’s objectives and to the program being evaluated. The article intends to present a few theoretical aspects relevant in studying the social programs evaluation: the main evaluation types, the evaluator’s role and the challenges that he has to face during the process and the professionalization of this field.
