Reform Directions in Child and Family Protection System

    by:
  • Elena Zamfir (Professor Ph.D. )

In 1989 Romania entered in the consciousness of the West with the image of the child symbol: the brave child climbing over barricades, with the pure enthusiasm of childhood, holding the flag of the Revolution. Just months over the events from December, the western countries were shocked by the nightmare images of a child from Romania, who was the result of an unconscious regime: the child from institutions, which seemed like an extermination camp. These images were terrifying indeed, especially the images from the institutions for children with disabilities. After twelve years from the Revolution, the most important condition that Romania needs to fulfill in order to be accepted in the European Union is to solve the problem of children at risk.
