A particular case of suicide, which is less discussed and less impressive, is the phenomenon of suicide among prisoners. Similar in many ways to the phenomenon among people at liberty, suicide among prisoners also has specific causes, which requires different preventive measures. This exploratory research brings to the foreground the perspectives of specialized staff in a Romanian penitentiary, of volunteers or collaborators from non-governmental organizations for the recovery and social reintegration of prisoners, as well as of former prisoners. By identifying the determining causes of this particular type of suicide, we can better understand how existing prevention measures can be improved or what kind of new measures can be adopted. At the same time, this study proposes a brief description of a possible behavioral portrait of the Romanian inmate who contemplates suicide. A good knowledge of this symptomatology by the persons in the vicinity of the suicidal person may lead to preventing the attempt and saving the life of the person.
