Consumerism of illicit drugs became a public health issue. At the moment there is an attempt to harmonize the national legislation as well as speciality services with those in European Union.
A major role in the team providing these services, i.e. rehabilitation sectors, day centres, residential centres, methadone centres is being held by the social worker. The essential role we must give to the social worker can be emphasized by the following example: in a methadone centre in U.S. a medical doctor works with 30 counsellors, these being represented mainly by social workers and psychologists. To be effective the intervention in these cases requires a large theoretical and practical knowledge in using a major instrument that being the motivational interview.
