This article presents findings from a qualitative study exploring the experiences of third-year undergraduate social work students with online education during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to mandatory social distancing measures, participants completed the first half of their three years education (bachelor’s degree) entirely online. The findings indicate that online education was perceived to present more challenges and limitations than benefits and opportunities. A significant challenge identified by students was the limited opportunities for socialization with peers and educators in this entirely new educational environment, which adversely impacted their communication, interaction and engagement in online classes, the development of a student identity, and overall personal satisfaction. Participants also reported emotional difficulties and concerns regarding their academic performance. Conversely, the benefits of online learning primarily included financial savings, psychological comfort amid the pressures of the pandemic, and increased time efficiency.
