This interdisciplinary study targets the social workers who deal often with those who suffer from various reasons. We know from sociological data that the specific issues faced by the social personnel in the ministry of counselling come mainly from rational, spiritual, and emotional areas. For that, we decided to appeal to the thinking and the experience of C.S. Lewis, who himself not only analyzed the intellectual ramifications of the problem of pain, but also shared some of his personal dramas in his books. Our study will survey three key domains from his writings (philosophical, theological, and sociological), and will extract three practical lessons at hand for the social worker in the process of counseling the sufferers: to accept that suffering is part of the human existence, to see that sometimes suffering is a transforming process, and that we should fight against evil and suffering.
