This paper proposes an examination of how the field of social work is perceived in the city of Shanghai, through ordinary citizens: these findings were corroborated by several academic studies on social services in China. In the theoretical part data on the history and the avatars of social work in the world's largest communist state are presented. The Chinese Central Government has assigned to the professional social workers a significant role in solving socio-demographic problems affecting China's welfare in the last century. The research part is a qualitative analysis of the common man's vision regarding social services, focusing on the most well-known categories of beneficiaries, children and the elderly.
