The explanation for the context and dominance of certain diseases within a given geographical context must be searched for in the lifestyle characterizing the population, but also in the norms at the core of the socio-cultural, economic, political, and religious system. “Third-generation diseases”, such as cancer, imply a more extensive approach to the medical interpretation. In oncology, more than in any other medical field, the biopsychosocial approach is a mandatory condition for an efficient care for the cancer patient and their family. In Romania, developing psychosocial services within the oncology departments would be an appropriate response to the complex needs of patients as well as an essential contribution to a balanced medical experience.
