The aim of the present paper is to discuss the main legislative reglementations in the social field, with regard to care provided for elderly in residential centres. We hope that one result of our analysis will be support offered to specialists working in the field of elderly care in residential homes in understanding the current legislative framework. The article synthesizes information about long term care provided in residential units for the elderly and the organisations of these services, the types of services provided to the elderly, types of beneficiaries, funding, specific legislation, as well as information about the cost standard. The concept of long term care is presented in the context of residential homes for the elderly, stressing the socio-medical nature of these services. Finally, in order to illustrate the concepts described throughout the article, we present a case study of a residential institution for the elderly and we conclude that this case study could also be regarded as model of good practice.
