Building on the experiences of a group of Romanian faculties, this article summarizes the efforts taken in the direction of developing a PhD program in Social work. This was the first time the process was carried in Romania in a consistent and supported manner since the re-establishing of social work educational programs in higher education. The goal of accreditation a PhD program in social work is one important step in developing the social work domain and in preparing the future practitioners/ researchers as leaders in social work education and practice research. We argue for continued recognition and strong support from all the stakeholders, for further development of doctoral programs in social work
