. This paper examines artificial intelligence (AI) as a socio-technical phenomenon embedded in cultural, economic, educational, legal, political, and technological structures. Drawing on sociological perspectives, it synthesizes research on AI’s positive contributions – e.g. improved access to services, enhanced participation, and new labour opportunities – and its negative impacts, including bias, inequality, labour precarity, and surveillance. The analysis highlights how AI reshapes institutional practices, power relations, and social stratification, emphasizing the need for continued sociological inquiry, ethical oversight, and structural governance to ensure equitable and inclusive AI integration.
Keywords: AI, social impact, positive impacts, negative impacts
