The ethics of social work are the basis for how a professional social worker defines themselves as an agent of moral/ ethical and social responsibility. The literature on this subject has shown that there has been a major change in how ethics are viewed or understood and applied, from being primarily normative (deontological codes) (Banks, 2008; Hugman, 2003) to a reflexive, contextualized and having a social justice focus. This review article explores the pathways of reflection on social work professional ethics through several important international author contributions (Reamer, 1998; Bisman, 2004; Clark, 2006; Chase, 2015). Using a narrative review of the theoretical literature, the themes of moral character, values of professionalism and ethical education in the development of an authentic professional conscience are addressed. The primary conclusion of this study is that ethics can't simply be reduced to compliance with rules but rather, ethics represents a dynamic process of self-reflection, discernment and commitment to human dignity.
