Considered, along the history and in different paradigms, as an anomaly, a condemnable act, as a social fact or as (in some instances) the only symptom of a psychiatric (pre-existing) condition, suicide and suicidal ideation are affecting all societies, to a greater or lesser extent. Any attempt to understand and to explain it can also be regarded as a step into the direction of prevention and intervention of one of the very fewest preventable deaths instances our society faces. The present study, based on extensive research on suicide in the first 25 years after the fall of communism in Romania, is putting together different existing perspectives from various sciences, in order to propose a new theory on suicidal behavior.
Keywords: suicide, suicidal behavior, coping mechanisms, incapacity to cope
