The lack of social and medical integration of vulnerable groups is a problem with historical roots, but also a current challenge for Romanian society. This situation is exacerbated by insufficient and non-functional collaboration between public institutions at local, county, regional and national level, as well as limited partnership with the private sector. Moreover, the complex responses of vulnerable people to socio-medical services and benefits can lead, in some cases, to dependency on them. The history of social and health care reflects significant changes over the years, influenced by transformations in the social perspective of vulnerable groups. These changes emphasize the clear needs of individuals, closely linked to current social demands, the new economy and medical lifestyle adaptations. My interest in this increasingly debated topic is based on the firm belief that social change can be achieved through the development of integrated socio-medical support networks and cohesive social systems. These, in close collaboration with well-trained professionals in the system, can help to create effective means for disadvantaged communities to find their way to a better life. At the same time, the active involvement of disadvantaged people in the process of social change can facilitate their transition towards active and participatory behavior in decision-making, turning them into agents of their own development.
