Billions of people worldwide face varying degrees of poverty, and while global organizations have expressed a commitment to ending poverty, efforts have not translated to as much tangible progress towards eradicating or all levitating poverty as hoped. The global effort to alleviate poverty is under mined by rising inequality and harmful social and economic policies. To better understand poverty and inequality from a global perspective, as well as the failure of global development to more significantly alleviate poverty, we must consider the modern-day iterations of colonialism. Furthermore, this paper discusses effective poverty alleviation strategies that align with principles of decolonization, namely community-based strategies that center the voices of community members and promote self-determination and empowerment. Finally, a significant reduction of poverty requires a global commitment to systemic, macro-level change. Although social workers typically practice at the local level, their potential impact should not be understated. They can play a key role in community organizing, increasing awareness of structural inequality, and up holding policies and practices that combat economic and social marginalization.
