The domestic violence is quite a spreaded phenomenon in Romania, and the registered number is lower than the actual number of victims. The domestic violence victims do not know their rights and they do not know where exactly to turn to for qualified help.This article analyzes the state fact of the domestic violence in Romania between the years 1980 and 2008. It is also focusing on presenting the causes and the effects of the phenomenon as well as how criminal law is punishing the aggressors. In the article, the accent falls on the link between the usage of alcoholic drinks and the violent behavior of a family member.
