This research article presents the preliminary results of a study conducted with a French institution hosting children with intellectual disabilities. It explores, from a “social geography” perspective, how social workers’ and children’s representations of space can encourage or deter from self-determination and inclusion in an urban context. This case study is related to an Erasmus+ cooperation project, based on ethnographic research in five European cities and aiming to develop pedagogical materials supporting the role of future social workers as agents of change in relation to more sustainable and socially just cities.
Keywords: Agents of change, sustainable urban communities, vulnerable citizens, children with intellectual disabilities, inclusion, relationship to space, self-determination
