Using a qualitative research approach, this study aimed to increase understanding of the context in which first sexual intercourse takes place among Romanian young people; 59 male and female students aged 19-29 years were interviewed and asked about their decision-making. The results provide support for some of the trends found in the existing research, such as young adults’ reasons for abstinence. However some findings challenged the results of other research, in particular contraceptive use among those young adults who described their first sexual intercourse as unplanned or spontaneous. Understanding the context and variety of factors that influence young adults’ first sexual intercourse, helps professionals interested in planning and delivering health and educational programs in this area
