The study attempt to describe the housing situation of Roma population in Romania, both in general terms and also in details. The study has both a descriptive and analytical approach, using quantitative and qualitative housing and demographic indicators. Also has a comparative dimension, using indicators in their dynamics (1992-1998-2006) for Roma but also for whole Romanian population. The study is structured in two parts: the first one – published in this issue – is tackling the housing exclusion phenomenon, but also the particulars of Roma housing/ dwellings (structure, floor space, housing density etc.) and explanatory factors for the state of art; the second part – to be published in a future issue – has an approach on access of Roma (housing) to public utilities and household assets.
