The evaluation of social services is a very significant topic all over Europe. Italian social work in the last decade began to show an interest in evaluation as an effect of maturation of the professional community. In this article I will present an attempt, undertaken in north and central Italy, linked to three different experiences of continuing education, aimed to develop in social workers a mental habit of evaluating their practice. The starting point is the importance of evaluation “in social work” and particularly of self-evaluation. I will also consider some specific tools, created by social workers participant to these training courses and accepted to be put into practice within their organizations on a trial basis.
